The chair November
a modern classic

Björn Jakobson, the founder of BabyBjörn and the man behind Artipelag, approached Veryday only eight months prior to the opening of the art center, with the request to design a chair with the potential of becoming a furniture classic. Take away three months for testing, production and shipping of the chairs, and it sounds like just another day at Veryday.

In 2012 we were asked to design furniture for Sweden’s highly acclaimed new Art & Design center, The Artipelag – A natural island wonderland in the archipelago and a must visit when in Stockholm.  The task was to design a unique, high quality stackable wood chair with the intention of becoming a classic. The result is a chair that at first sight might appear as rather simple, but at the second glance you´ll discover its complexity. The chair November, is a crafted chair made entirely out of wood. Described as beautiful, comfortable and sustainable.

November chairThe Architecture and interior design of Artipelag is all about the interplay between art and nature; this as well as the muted light and long shadows of the low November sun inspired the Veryday team in their design work. The soft shapes and surfaces, creates lines that builds the chair’s character.

Most of the design work was done using scale models, carefully sculpturing each part of the chair by hand. The designers wanted to dictate the smooth transition between the shapes and angles of the chair with full control. Making sure the chair was beautiful from every angle. All sides of the chair were considered as equally important. Not the least the back, which actually is the front when placed at a table. Every part of the chair is CNC milled. A clever Conceptual Engineering construction and the high tolerance of the CNC machine allow the chair to be assembled using only wood and glue, still ending up with an extremely rigid and durable design. By using new state of the art production methods, it was possible to manufacture the chair exactly the way the designers wanted, without compromises.

We wanted to create a durable design, with a soft touch and feel and therefore it’s great to see that so many visitors are engaging with the chairs and really enjoy them.

A part from the aesthetically pleasing and sophisticated form, the design team has also considered the ergonomic aspects. In short, November is ergonomically designed for comfort. Of interest is also that it is manufactured at a carpentry with almost 100 years of experience of chair production, currently using the latest technology to guarantee superb quality and longevity.

Today, the chair has found its place at the Art & Design center amongst the pine trees and the rocks and with a magnificent view over the archipelago.
