Design industry veteran joins Veryday

Published: 28 Sep 2017

We’re happy to welcome Richard Vander Meer to the Veryday New York team as VP Client Development. Working together with CDO Daniel Höglund, Richard will focus on building new client relationships, integrating his extensive design industry experience as a global lead on client-facing teams with professional services and consulting organizations. During his almost nine years at frog, Richard brought together multidisciplinary design teams to solve complex innovation and user experience challenges. Most recently, as Global Head of Program Management, he drove delivery across the organization. Prior to that, he was General Manager of frog’s Munich and Shanghai offices. We sat down with Richard to ask a few questions about his new role and to find out what makes him tick.

Would you give us a brief overview of your new role at Veryday?

My focus will be on developing new client relationships and fostering their growth. I’ll work with our teams to bring the client point of view into programs, and contribute to content by drawing on my design experience within multiple industries across user experience, product development, interactive marketing and technology. Currently, my concentration is on the healthcare industry.

Tell us about how and why you landed at Veryday.

People connections landed me here. Montana Cherney, a former co-worker who’s now at Veryday, reached out and said, “I may have an interesting opportunity for you, are you interested?” Good people know good people. Veryday NYC was looking for a leader who would continue to grow their U.S. presence. I like the idea of building something – and the challenges presented by a growth mindset. Another enticing proposition was Veryday’s integration with McKinsey, which capitalizes on how design, business strategy and analytics can reinvent businesses. And the more I spoke to the people at Veryday, the more I realized these are my people: smart, innovative, passionate designers who are focused on a deep understanding of human needs.

What motivates you in your work?

I enjoy ambiguous situations; digging into demystify and create clarity. Some people describe me as fearless, ready to dive in and figure things out. I’m fascinated with design thinking and the complexity of the people component. In any realm and at the core of any experience is how people interact with environments, products and, well, everything!

What drives you? And what would you say is your passion?

Curiosity is a huge driver. That’s why travel is a passion for me. I find myself looking at the world through an experiential lens. It’s remarkable to immerse yourself into new environments and learn to see things from another point of view. I often go off the beaten path, looking to meet people who enrich my experience by showing me a local point of view. I’ve had the opportunity to work in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. I lived for extended periods in London, Munich and Shanghai. It’s amazing to learn and understand the nuances of different cultures and how they translate into client interactions, team dynamics, products and services.
