Internationally recognized design strategist joins Veryday.

Published: 28 Nov 2017

We are pleased to announce that Eilidh Dickson has joined the Veryday New York team as Associate Design Director. Eilidh brings extensive experience in design strategy, leading human centered design processes, and working at the intersection of business and innovation to help clients better understand customers and turn insights into solutions.

A Scottish-born, New York City-based service designer, product strategist and design educator who’s worked on product and service innovation for almost a decade, Eilidh’s skill set blends team leadership, design research, systems thinking and hands-on prototyping. Her recent work focuses on healthcare and pharma innovation, with the ultimate ambition to empower individuals to lead healthier, happier lives.

Prior to joining Veryday, Eilidh spent eight years shaping CIID’s consulting practice in Copenhagen where she led projects for LEGO, Novo Nordisk, LEO Pharma, Maersk and Toyota, among other clients. Her work won several design awards and has been featured in the international press, including CNN, Core 77, The Independent, WIRED, designboom and the LA Times. She also teaches classes in design research and service design.

We sat down with Eilidh to ask a few questions about her new role and to get to know her better.

Would you give us a brief overview of your role?

I see it as quite multifaceted. Along with the other directors, I lead strategy and design for client-facing programs and support our awesome teams throughout those engagements. I also work with NYC leadership to help shape our studio’s vision, team, portfolio and culture. I love nurturing people and building relationships – the amazing design team we have in New York, our McKinsey friends, and reaching out to the broader NYC design community to strengthen our network.

Tell us about how and why you landed at Veryday.

I met Montana Cherney through mutual contacts many years ago. We really hit it off. Whenever I was in New York we would have coffee, contemplate design, life and collaborating together some day! This year the timing was suddenly right – I was looking for a new environment and challenge and Veryday was looking for a director in New York. When I met the team, it was a no-brainer: kind, humble, very smart people all rolled into one.

What motivates you in your work?

People and diverse collaborations are huge drivers in my day-to day work. I‘ve spent my career experiencing different cultures from an ethnographic research angle – from rural towns in India to shipping yards at the Panama Canal. I’m super excited to experience diversity through internal collaborations with McKinsey and beyond. A good friend who works in organizational transformation at Spotify once told me, “It’s very easy to look for cultural fit, but when you really learn is when you look for cultural growth.”

What drives you? What would you say is your passion?

I’m really driven and excited about the intersection of strategy and making. I love working on strategic projects that are complex and messy and systemic in nature, and bringing those projects to life through making. Strategy doesn’t have to be a PowerPoint deck! I originally trained as a product designer. There’s a part of me that still loves to work and think with my hands – exploring materials, tactility and constantly evolving how to tell stories and bring ideas to life.

How would you summarize Veryday in three words?

Curious. Humble. Driven.

Fun fact

I developed my love for New York City when I worked at the Fresh Air Fund when I was 18.

Favorite quote:  “We are called to be architects of the future.” – Buckminster Fuller

Favorite hangout in New York (or anywhere else in the world):

I’m in love with many spots from my years in Copenhagen. The top two are probably Jægersborg Dyrehaven, a 1,000-acre deer park and forest just north of the city and Kalvebod Brygge, a wooden boardwalk designed to look like a wave. It’s wonderful for sunny days and swimming in the harbor!

Favorite activity:

A long autumn run in NYC – weaving across bridges, through expansive parks and along the water’s edge (followed by tacos and a beer).

Currently inspired by:

Using different video and photography techniques to bring research to life. My favorite tool right now is a 360 camera.
