A new way of treating asthma

While allergic airway inflammation is known to be the major underlying cause of asthma, there are few methods of measuring it. The founders of Aerocrine met at the prestigious Karolinska Institute in Sweden, where they were the first to identify nitric oxide (NO) as a marker of inflammation. Aerocrine has taken this significant discovery from laboratory to listed company and is now established in some of the world’s largest markets.

Improving testing for dramatic results

Veryday helped Aerocrine to design a small, light, portable and affordable product that could be used for routine testing in clinics and at home, by the patients themselves. Frequent testing provides early warning signs and helps determine correct medicine dosage.

The outcome was the Niox Mino, the world’s first handheld device for monitoring inflammation in the airways of asthma patients. Our designers gave the device a playful and friendly shape that houses advanced technology and downplays the seriousness of the disease. The device is easy to hold and fun to use, even for young children. The digital interface has easy-to-understand symbols and sound effects that guide the user throughout the testing process. Individual test results can be stored on smart cards.

Testing prototypes for the best possible solution

Our designers developed and tested three prototypes on adults and children in different countries. Interestingly enough, doctors initially felt that a digital interface would be too complicated for the patients. The tests revealed, however, that even five year-olds could not only understand and use the interface as intended, but they also thought it was fun. The kids turned out to be very design-conscious, and a Dutch five year-old even thought that the design must have been inspired by the Italian design brand Alessi!

By developing a new portable, easy-to-use and affordable device to test airway inflammation, we have helped Aerocrine reach new target groups and expand internationally, setting new benchmarks for the Life Science industry as a whole.

Aerocrine has achieved a marketleading position with Niox Mino, thanks to fruitful collaboration with Veryday.
